I've been thinking of joining a book club but wonder about being able to get the books I need to read in time. I think most book clubs read current books, and the NLS doesn't often have books available until they have been out for almost a year. And it seems to be difficult to find books on tape or CD in libraries that aren't abridged.

Anyone belong to a book club? I'd like to hear about your experiences.

I don't belong to a book club, but I'd like to be parto f one. I was in one in high school, and it was very exciting. My librarian was very accomodating, as she had most of the books which were being read on CD before the first meeting. I think my favorite book that we read would have to be The Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime. can't remember who wrote it, but I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to learn a little more about autism. It's narrated by a boy who has the disorder.

Wow, a topic from the past. Well, since posting this topic more than six months ago, I have not joined a book club but have joined some e-mail lists for the discussion of books. Someone on one of the lists told me about booksfree.com where you can get books on CD on a rental basis. They don't have everything I want, but they did have a book I needed for a discussion this month.

We could start a Zoners book club.

Now that's a really good idea: a zoners bookclub.

Anyone have any ideas how it could work?

I would be interested in putting in some time on this project, but don't really know how to begin.

Here are 2 libraries that offer books for free on large print and in braille, that can be sent free of charge anywhere in the world. The addresses are
www.calibre.org.uk
www.nlbuk.org
I think that is a good start.

I think starting a Zoners Bookclub would be a little difficult just because if people from outside the US wanted to join, we'd have to consider the time changes and their schedules for meetings over the Internet, so nothing clashes with whatever they're doing, and that includes sleeping. Of course, e-mail always comes in handy for that. Other than that, I don't see why we couldn't start one. I don't really have any ideas about how this would work. Sorry.

We could just create a board topic under booknook for the discussion of a particular book. The trouble would be getting enough people to agree on what book to discuss and then making sure everyone has time to read it.

I'm up for this, in whatever form, though the board topic one looks like the simplest and most inclusive. Someone can just be decisive and pick a book, and post a topic with the basic info, maybe including a link to a downloadable Etext, in case people are desperate and can't find it in another form. Then the topic can be dredged up in a week or so for discussion. Hopefully that will keep itself running for a while.
Good idea anyway, Bob and Becky, since it seems to be a bit from both of you.

Hey Bob had nothing to do with it. I let him use my brain once in awhile to make it look like he had an idea, but then I make him give it back and he's back to being a vegetable.

We should at least somehow find out how many people might be interested and then discuss type of book we prefer, i.e. romance, mystery, adventure, etc.

Are we still trying to figure out how to establish a Zone bookclub?

I don't belong to a book club, but do borrow braille books from NLB (national library for the blind), or the RNIB national library service as it is called now.

I was in a book club at the public library in my city and its theme was based on authors who would come there to give readings and discussion of their books. It was fun because it made me read books I would not probably have read on my own and would generate much lively discussion

I think a Zoners Book Club would be awesome, and like the idea of a board discussion. Figuring out the logistics like how much time to allow for reading a book, the type of book and so on will be interesting. Personally, I would read a book outside of my comfort zone level if the majority has in mind a certain book because, as I mentioned before, it takes me outside the box of reading material I would choose for myself. If it's accessible, I'm definitely interested, smile..

Yeah, like I said in the other topic, I'd be delighted to join. but you'd have to give me more then just a week. Lmfao!

Oh, yeah, never was in one, now I think of it, I might join or make one. Lol!

Yeah, it's quite excellent. I wish we can make our own board. How do we do that?
